Did you know Superman was created in 1938, during a time when Americans, especially kids, needed a superhero. That time was the Great Depression. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster met in high school and began collaborating on stories and science fiction characters. They come up with a story called The Reign of the Super-Man. But this original story has Superman playing the part of a Lex Luthor type villain. When this character didn’t gain much popularity, they decided to turn him into the hero rather than the villain. Thus, an American classic is born. At first Siegel and Shuster didn’t have much luck convincing newspapers to publish their character, but they didn’t give up. They spent time perfecting the Superman character and honing in on his story too. They started to gain sucess when they presented Superman to a local comic book publisher who put Superman in their new Action Adventure series. After the 4th book in the series the comic books flew off the shelves and DC Comics had a new hit. The sad part of this story is that the young and naive Siegel and Shuster sold the rights to Superman to the publishing company for a mere $130. They later attempted to sue DC Comics but only received meager earnings from their creation and at times lived in poverty while DC Comics has made millions from the Superman franchise.
The death of Superman? No way. Superman can’t die! But he did. In a classic battle against an enemy named Doomsday. The Justice League was fighting to save the city of Metropolis but they were getting beat by the nearly indestructible Doomsday, when Superman entered to defend his city. Superman was finally able to defeat Doomsday but not without sacrificing his own life. But wait. How can Superman die but still keep appearing in comics? That’s easy. A simple superman resurection did the trick and the Eradicator came by to spring Superman back to life. He was able to go on and fight the Cyborg even tho he was nearly powerless. Superman saves the day again.
